Burrell?s Myers states his college case at state track meet

By Paul Kogut
Valley News Dispatch

Published: Sunday, May 27, 2012, 12:30?a.m.
Updated 10 hours ago

SHIPPENSBURG ? When Burrell senior sprinter Darren Myers thinks about how far he?s come in a year, he?s amazed.

Myers went from falling short of the WPIAL track and field championships last year to earning a pair of PIAA medals this season. He went from being a relative unknown in local track circles to a success story.

Myers was sixth place in the Class AA 200 meters in 22.73 seconds and eighth in the 100 (11.41) on Saturday at the state meet at Shippensburg University.

?I?m ecstatic, thinking about not making WPIALs last year to medaling at states,? Myers said. ?That?s a big accomplishment.?

Myers, who won the WPIAL Class AA 200 title last week, hopes his success will attract a college scholarship offer. His ability to compete with elite high school sprinters could boost his chances.

?I?m hoping someone will come along real soon,? he said. ?That?s all I can hope for. Any Division I or II schools are fine. I just want to run in college.?

Several other local boys made it to the medal stand yesterday. In Class AAA, Kiski Area?s 3,200 relay team of senior Richard Lednak, junior Tyler Snider and sophomores Brent Kennedy and Patrick Miller took sixth place and dusted their school record with a time of 7:51.40.

Last week, the Cavaliers repeated as WPIAL champions even though they have two new members this season. Last year, despite winning the WPIAL title, they failed to make the finals at states. The squad earned some redemption.

?The experience from last year helped prepare us,? Lednak said. ?The pressure didn?t get to us. I think we proved ourselves.?

Kennedy (4:19.51) also took eighth in the 1,600.

?I got two state medals,? Kennedy said. ?You can?t ask for more than that. I?ll look to build on that next year.?

In the Class AAA 3,200, Fox Chapel sophomore Ethan Martin ran a personal-best time of 9:24.35 to clinch a seventh-place medal. Martin was seeded 13th.

?It?s awesome,? he said. ?I was seeded pretty low, and I was worried I?d be caught in the back (of the pack). But it split apart a little, and I was able to work my way up.?

In the Class AA discus, Riverview senior Nick Delmonaco scored a sixth-place medal at 153 feet, 9 inches.

?I wasn?t happy,? he said. ?I was definitely off. It just didn?t connect with me.?

On Friday, Delmonaco placed third in the shot put.

?I was better in the discus most of this year, but I ended up doing better in the shot put at states,? he said. ?It?s crazy how it works sometimes.?

StableBit DrivePool for Windows Home Server 2011 Beta 1.0.2.6131 released

There has been another beta build from CoveCube! StableBit DrivePool development marches on ? now its version 1.0.2.6131.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu16

Here is how CoveCube describes this application:

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can?t be used.

This beta version?s change log:

1.0.2.6131

* [D] Added option to boost read I/O priority of network originated I/O requests over most other I/O. Off by default. (CoveFs_BoostNetworkIoPriority in .config)

* [D] Corrected real-time file placement algorithm when using multiple partitions on the same physical disk. Sometimes, it would not select the partition with the most free space. Generally applies to disks > 2TB+.

* [D] Updated locking model based on some reverse engineering of Windows internals.

* [D] Fixed share access delegation between memory mapped file I/O and non-memory mapped file I/O.

* [D] Prevent file truncation, when mapped sections exist and the truncation would overlap the memory mapped region.

* [D] Virtual memory mapped section synchronization with on-disk data for writes. This issue was exposed by Microsoft Forefront Client Security which memory maps all files and expects that mapping to be in sync with the on-disk data.

* Updated deployment to be in sync with Scanner.

Sources: US envoy to Afghanistan to step down

Veteran U.S. diplomat Ryan Crocker is expected to step down soon from his post as President Barack Obama's envoy to Afghanistan, departing the U.S. mission in Kabul as the United States negotiates a host of challenges on its course out of the long, costly war.

The Obama administration is considering Deputy Ambassador James Cunningham to replace Crocker when he leaves the post as early as this month, sources familiar with the matter said.

It was not immediately clear why the widely respected diplomat was leaving.

Crocker, who came out of retirement to become ambassador in Kabul in July 2011, has led diplomatic efforts in Afghanistan at a time when the White House has focused on reducing the U.S. presence there ? and on doing so without letting the country slide back into civil war.

Crocker was one of the high-level officials discussing Afghanistan's future at a NATO summit that concluded on Monday in Obama's home town of Chicago.

Slideshow: Afghanistan: Nation at a crossroads (on this page)

There, Western leaders refined their plans to pull most of their troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and put local forces in charge.

At the core of Crocker's job has been maintaining a difficult, and at times openly hostile, U.S. relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and overseeing civilian efforts to combat corruption and poverty in Afghanistan.

Video: NATO focuses on Afghanistan (on this page)

Crocker has anchored the U.S. diplomatic presence at a time when Western sites ? and even the American embassy building itself ? have been the target by Taliban militants.

NATO summit prompts little buzz on streets of Kabul

Crocker has also urged the Afghan government to make reforms that could help it secure billions of dollars in future outside aid.

The appointment of a diplomat of Crocker's stature in 2011 was seen as another sign of Obama's desire to turn around a campaign that was receiving insufficient attention and resources for years ? and of his determination to steer the U.S. mission there toward a conclusion.

Obama, Karzai push post-2014 vision of Afghanistan

News of Crocker's departure comes only weeks after Cameron Munter, the U.S. ambassador in Islamabad, informed his staff he would be leaving his post in coming months.

In yet another diplomatic departure as Obama's current term enters its final stretch, Reuters reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's top diplomat for the Middle East, Jeffrey Feltman, will soon leave for a top post at the United Nations.

Tough Iraq posting
Crocker earned respect in his earlier role as U.S. ambassador to Iraq from 2007-2009, when a surge in U.S. forces was credited with helping to calm a country convulsed by sectarian violence.

The post in Baghdad ? when suicide bombings and mortar attacks were a daily occurrence ? appeared to tax Crocker's health. He has also served as ambassador to Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon.

Report: Taliban, Afghan troops forge agreements

As a young diplomat, he worked at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut when it was bombed in 1982 and when an American Marine barracks was attacked the following year.

Crocker retired from the government in April 2009, becoming dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.

Cunningham, who would need to be nominated and confirmed by the Senate if he were to become the permanent U.S. envoy, was ambassador to Israel before he came to Kabul last year.

Fire beetles may revolutionize early-warning systems for forest fires

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? Black fire beetles of the genus Melanophila possess unusual infrared sensors. It seems that they use these to detect forest fires, even from great distances, since their wood-eating larvae can only develop in freshly burned trees. Scientists have been wondering for a long time how sensitive these biological IR sensors really are. Researchers from the University of Bonn and from the Forschungszentrum J?lich have concluded that the beetles' sensors might even be more sensitive that uncooled infrared sensors designed by humans. Having this natural model opens up new perspectives, such as for early warning systems for forest fires.

The results have been published in PLoS ONE, an online journal of the Public Library of Science.

Criminal cases can often only be solved using forensics to piece together physical evidence and reconstruct what happened. Prof. Dr. Helmut Schmitz from the Institute of Zoology at the University of Bonn and Dr. Her?bert Bousack from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungszentrum J?lich went through the same experience. Prof. Schmitz has been researching fire beetles of the genus Melanophila and their sophisticated IR sensors, which these pyrophilous insects use to detect forest fires, for many years. This is a very special ecological niche. "It allows the beetle larvae to freely eat their way through the wood because the trees, which have been killed by great heat, can no longer fight back, and there are hardly any predators that would eat them in freshly burned forests," the Bonn zoologist reported.

A tiny sphere senses changes in pressure due to heat

Meanwhile, with the help of the Forschungszentrum caesar in Bonn and the Technische Universit?t Dresden, the researchers have unraveled the functional principle of this so-called photo-mechanical beetle infrared sensor, and they have started to work on a technical reconstruction of this natural prototype. Tiny cuticula spheres of the beetles' IR receptors ? at 0.02 mm, smaller than the diameter of a fine hair ? are filled with water and absorb IR radiation very well. Due to the fact that they heat up, the water in particular expands suddenly, and the resulting change in pressure is immediately detected by highly sensitive mechano-sensitive sensory cells. "However, an important question had remained unanswered ? how sensitive is the sensor?" asked Prof. Schmitz. This question could be best answered by equipping Melanophila beetles with mini transmitters on their search for forest fires. "Then we would be able to log the distance flown to the burnt area and, based on this distance, calculate the minimum required heat radiation the beetles are attracted by," explained the zoologist. But at a length of about 1 cm, the beetles are too small to carry a transmitter for long distances.?

In 1925, a blaze destroyed a large oil storage facility in California

The resourceful scientists turned to a past event, which proved helpful. In August 1925, a large oil depot in Coalinga, California, went up in flames. "Reports from that era mentioned that the huge blaze attracted masses of charcoal beetles (Melanophila consputa)," explained Prof. Schmitz. Since the fire location was in the forest-less Central Valley of California, the beetles must have flown in from a great distance. Most likely, they came from large forests on the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada about 130 kilometers away, where there had been large forest fires in the two preceding years. "On such burnt areas, beetles multiply en masse, and after they emerged, they went to look for forest fires in the subsequent summers," said Prof. Schmitz. A forested area about 28 kilo?meters from the burning oil tanks in the San Benito Mountain Natural Area north of Coalinga seems rather unlikely as the source of the beetles since forest fires had not been reported in this area prior to 1925.

Based on a model from fire protection technology

Dr. Herbert Bousack, an engineer from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungszentrum J?lich performed the calculations for modeling the sensitivity of the sensor. "The Coalinga fire is a good match for this simulation," Dr. Bousack reported. First however, many parameters had to be researched painstakingly, such as the size of the fire, or the weather conditions. "More than 85 years after the event, such data was hard to obtain." The engineer based his mathematical simulation on various fire models such as are used in assessing of fire risks for storage tank facilities. "We adapted these technical guidelines for our purposes, which allowed us to fall back on proven experiences," said the engineer.

According to the math, the beetle sensor is incredibly sensitive

The result was amazing. "According to our calculations, the infrared sensors of Melanophila beetles should be able to sense signals even if they are below the level of thermal noise," reported Dr. Bousack. Obviously, the beetles rely on stochastic resonance. "This method enables them to detect weak periodic signals that are normally superimposed by the noise," explained the engineer. According to the results of the calculations, the sensors can detect the tiniest amounts of heat - roughly comparable to the energy resolution of radio telescopes. "Our simulations and calculations make it seem quite probable that the IF sensors of pyrophilous Melanophila beetles are more sensitive than uncooled infrared sensors currently available in the market," Prof. Schmitz summarized the outcome. "Additional efforts to implement this natural prototype technologically will be required." So, they might be able to revolutionize early-warning systems for forest fires.

Webcasts push solar eclipse to the masses

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? It was one of the best places in the western United States to watch the annular solar eclipse, and people drove for days just to get to this dusty stretch west of Albuquerque.

Did it matter?

Some say no. The game of chasing celestial spectacles like Sunday's eclipse has changed thanks to live webcasting by observatories around the world and social network sites that are being fueled by grainy smartphone photographs and video clips.

The National Park Service streamed the eclipse live on its website from Petroglyph National Monument, a remote expanse of prairie and long dormant basalt volcanoes that was situated directly in the path of the eclipse.

It was a first for the agency, proving that sharing such an event with the world from such a location was technically possible.

"This was a big step for us," Jeff Olson, an agency spokesman who was on his way back to Washington, D.C., on Monday after watching the event at the monument.

Across town, the University of New Mexico did the same thing. In Japan, Panasonic went live from Mount Fuji.

Millions of people across a narrow strip of eastern Asia and the Western U.S. turned their sights skyward for the annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges.

The rare lunar-solar alignment was visible in Asia early Monday before it moved across the Pacific ? and the international dateline ? where it was seen in parts of the western United States late Sunday afternoon.

"I always tell people it's like going to a sporting event. It's always better to be at the game but watching it on TV is not so bad," said Patrick Taolucci of Slooh SpaceCamera, which can tap into observatory feeds around the world and stream them online while experts discuss what's happening.

With the location and equipment barrier removed, UNM astronomy professor Richard Rand said this new way of experiencing eclipses and other celestial events can only add to their understanding and result in more interest in science.

Rand received an email from a mother Monday who said she and her daughter were able to watch the university's streaming of the eclipse on their smartphone while driving to a viewing site in New Mexico.

Emails have also been pouring into the National Park Service. More than 17,000 people logged on Sunday, including people who missed out on seeing the ring due to clouds in Colorado and a person who was wheelchair bound and unable to get to any of the viewing parties.

But for some, especially the globe-trotting eclipse groupies, there was nothing like being in Albuquerque.

Alan Macklem made the three-day trip from Manitoba, Canada, with his wife.

"I've started," he said. "It's going to turn into a compulsion and then into a habit and then I won't be able to break it. I'll have to see every eclipse from now on."

So what's the fascination?

Watchers agree there's simply nothing like it and it doesn't really matter whether people are behind a pair of solar glasses or watching it on a smartphone.

"I think it's something that really goes to the inner soul, the guts, the real inside of who we are as human beings," Olson said. "We're drawn to the sun. We're drawn to the stars at night."

Can HRT Prevent Colorectal Cancer? | Menopause Goddess Blog ...

Plumeria Time ? lynette sheppard

Hormone replacement therapy and cancer risk: we hear about it all the time. This guest post by Nader Ahmadnia of colonoscopy.com brings to light new research findings about HRT and its relationship to colorectal cancer. Interesting findings.? I know ? more to think about and weigh when considering risks vs benefit of HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy.)? Sigh?and just when our brains have gone on safari or something. At any rate, this is worth reading.

Correlation Between Menopause Hormone Therapy and Cancer
What is Menopausal Hormone Therapy?
Many women turn to hormone therapy when they really need help with menopause symptoms like nighttime sweating and hot flashes. Hormone therapy involves the intake of estrogen and/or progesterone to make up for the natural drop in production of female hormones that occurs when women go through menopause. Typically, the treatment is temporary. Most doctors recommend that a patient stop relying on hormone therapy once the body adjusts to initial menopausal changes and symptoms taper off, as risks associated with this treatment method increase the longer a woman is on it.
Other names for Menopausal Hormone Therapy include:
Post-menopausal Hormones
Post-menopausal Hormone Therapy
Hormone Replacement Therapy
While Menopausal Hormone Therapy has met pretty widespread use in the United States, many doctors still debate whether the health benefits outweigh the risks. In particular, several large-scale studies have suggested that that hormone therapy could affect the likelihood that a woman will develop certain cancers, in particular cancer of the lining of the uterus, or endometrial cancer.
Does Menopausal Hormone Therapy Put Me At Risk of Colon Cancer?
According to the Women?s Health Initiative, in fact, Estrogen-Progestin Therapy (EPT) actually reduced the risk that a woman would develop cancer of the colon and/or rectum by as much as 40 percent. This staggering statistic dropped off somewhat after the woman had stopped undergoing this specific type of hormone treatment for a period of 2 years. These results have been replicated in various studies. Unfortunately, the same benefits were not as widely concluded in studies of colorectal cancer risk and Menopausal Hormone Therapy that utilized only Estrogen Therapy (ET).
Is Estrogen-Progestin Therapy Safe?
Because researchers are still collecting information about the correlation between hormone therapy and risk of cancer, there is no definite prognosis for patients going through menopause. It is best to consult a doctor who knows your specific medical history if you are concerned about your health. Although mature women looking to lower the risk of colorectal cancer with Estrogen-Progestin Therapy may find study results promising, it is important to take other factors into consideration, such as the effect that hormone therapy has on heart disease, stroke and susceptibility to blood clots. Estrogen-Progestin Therapy has also been shown to increase the risk of other cancers prevalent in females, such as breast cancer.
When considering any kind of Menopausal Hormone Therapy to treat your menopausal symptoms, talk to your primary care provider about taking the lowest dose possible and for only for how long it is necessary. Also talk to your doctor about exploring other options, such as herbal and/or dietary supplements. As usual, you will need to maintain a regular check-up schedule to check for signs of developing cancer. For more information about the benefits and risks of Menopause Hormone Therapy, visit online resources provided by reputable organizations such as the National Women?s Health Information Center and/or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Senate sends Obama bill to renew Ex-Im Bank

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate voted on Tuesday to renew the U.S. Export-Import Bank's charter through September 2014 and raise its lending cap to $140 billion, overcoming objections from conservative Republicans who wanted to shut the bank down.

The bill now goes to President Barack Obama, who said he would sign it and praised lawmakers from both parties for coming together to pass the bill.

"This important step will help American businesses create jobs here at home and sell their products around the world - all at no cost to taxpayers," Obama said in a statement.

The Senate voted 78-20 to approve the bill, just a few weeks before the bank's charter expires on May 31. Bank officials also warned they were close to reaching their current $100 billion lending cap because of record demand in recent years.

Twenty-seven of the Senate's Republicans voted for the renewal and 19 against. The House of Representatives passed the same bill last week by a vote of 330-93. All of the 'no' votes in that chamber were Republican.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said the nearly 80-year-old government bank is needed to compete with other government export credit agencies around the world.

"We can't afford to give an inch to our global competitors. Canada, France and India already provide seven times the assistance for exporters that America does. China and Brazil provide 10 times the support," Reid said.

Ex-Im provides direct loans and other financing assistance to help U.S. exporters make foreign sales.

U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing is the bank's biggest beneficiary, and other top clients include Caterpillar, General Electric and KBR.

Last year, the bank authorized more than $32 billion in financing to support $40.6 billion in exports from more than 3,600 U.S. companies. It estimates that activity supported about 290,000 export-related jobs.

The Senate action allows "the bank to continue financing U.S. exports to meet foreign competition and fill the void when commercial funding is unavailable," Ex-Im President Fred Hochberg said in a statement.

"CRONY CAPITALISM"

What has usually been a routine reauthorization of the bank became much more complicated this year due partly to concerns raised by the conservative Tea Party wing of the Republican party.

Many Republicans elected in 2010 see the bank as unnecessary government interference in the private market, even though the bulk of the party still supports the bank.

"The government shouldn't be picking winners and losers. We need to end the corporate welfare that distorts the market and feeds crony capitalism," Senator Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, said during Senate debate.

"The corporations that largely benefit from the Ex-Im Bank should have no trouble marshalling their resources to compete in today's economy. If they are struggling, then they are most likely not deserving of taxpayer help," Lee said.

Conservative groups, such as Club for Growth, also questioned the need for the bank and raised concern about potential taxpayer losses as its loan volume swells.

Bank defenders say it is conservatively run and has earned $3.7 billion in profits for taxpayers since 2005.

Business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Manufacturers lobbied hard for the bank.

Against that backdrop, House Republican leader Eric Cantor and second-ranking House Democrat Steny Hoyer struck a deal earlier this month to renew Ex-Im's charter until September 2014.

That deal, reflected in the bill approved last week by the House and on Tuesday by the Senate, immediately increases the bank's lending cap to $120 billion through September.

It increases the cap to $140 billion in equal installments over the following two years, as long as loan defaults remain below 2 percent and the bank meets other conditions.

The bill also addresses a complaint from Delta Air Lines that it has been hurt by the bank's lending to foreign competitors such as Air India at interest rates lower than the carrier could get for itself.

The bill directs the U.S. Treasury Department to pursue trade talks aimed at reducing and then eliminating government export subsidies.

The legislation also requires the bank to give interested parties an opportunity to comment on any transaction over $100 million to try to ensure that U.S. companies are not placed at a competitive disadvantage by a particular sale.

J.J. Abrams Drama, Mindy Kaling Comedy Rule Fall TV Lineup

As major networks announce their programming, MTV News picks the shows that will have you glued to the screen.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

May is the month that has television fans rejoicing or mourning as TV networks, at their upfront presentations, announce which shows are being picked up, which are being renewed and which are getting the ax. The fall lineup looks particularly interesting as Deadline reports what's in store for CBS, the CW, Fox and NBC. From a "Sex and the City" prequel to a daring dystopian drama from J.J. Abrams, we've picked the shows that'll have us glued to our small screens for their debuts come the fall.

The first show on our list is "Partners," based on the real-life friendship of a straight guy and a gay man. The series will star Michael Urie of "Ugly Betty," Sophia Bush of "One Tree Hill," David Krumholtz and Brandon Routh. CBS picked up the comedy along with "Friend Me," a show following Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Nicholas Braun as two best friends who move from Bloomington, Indiana, to Los Angeles to begin their new jobs at Groupon. Even though this sounds heavily like the male version of "2 Broke Girls," Mintz-Plasse's work in "Superbad" and "Kick-Ass" has us interested in the pilot.

One of the reigning networks in teen television, the CW, picked up the highly anticipated "Sex and the City" prequel, "The Carrie Diaries." The show centers on a young Carrie Bradshaw navigating the ups and downs of high school in the 1980s (and always looking fabulous while doing so). Along with Miss Bradshaw, the channel also chose "Arrow," based on DC Comics' "Green Arrow." The series will turn the protagonist into less of a superhero and more of an action star in the same vein as Jason Bourne. And although the CW canceled "Ringer" and "The Secret Circle," the network picked up "Gossip Girl" for its final season. Maybe this will prompt Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf into a final romance? We can only hope!

Over in Fox-land, they've renewed hit shows "Glee," "Fringe" and "The X Factor" as well as the breakout series "New Girl." Added to the lineup is "The Mindy Project," a single-camera comedy by Mindy Kaling following a woman's anxious attempt to rid herself of all her bad habits. "After all, how many doctors make inappropriate toasts at their ex-boyfriend's wedding, nearly drown at the bottom of a stranger's pool and get arrested for disorderly conduct just moments before having to deliver a baby?" Deadline asks when describing the show.

Apparently, not enough — we'll be watching! Also chosen by the network is "The Goodwin Games," centering on three grown siblings who return home following their father's death. When they're made aware of their unexpected $20 million inheritance, they must go through a series of tasks their father left behind before they can claim their money. So no, folks, there won't be blood; this isn't a small-screen take on "The Hunger Games."

But speaking of dystopian dramas, after renewing veteran comedy "The Office" and the popular reality series "The Voice," NBC picked up a new series produced by J.J. Abrams called "Revolution." The show centers on the world 15 years after the electricity is mysteriously shut off and families are living quiet lives aided by candlelight and lanterns. When one young woman's father is murdered by the militia, she sets off on a journey with two unlikely companions to discover what happened in the past and how to retrieve their lost future. Do you think this is all Dharma's fault?

Which shows are you excited to watch this fall? Tell us in the comments.

Survivor Winner Crowned, New Season Announced

It was ladies night on Survivor: One World yesterday, as five women battled for the $1 million grand prize on the season 24 finale.

But - no offense to Chelsea, Sabrina, Alicia or Christina - these final few episodes have really been all about Kim Spradlin, who dominated as few before her have, earning the votes of the contest-filled jury AND the $100,000 reward as the Fan Favorite.

The only question isn't whether Kim deserved to win it all, but where she now ranks among all-time Survivor greats such as Boston Rob (Survivor: Redemption Island), Brian Heidik (Survivor: Thailand) and Tom Westman (Survivor: Palau)?

Jeff Probst, meanwhile, announced that season 25 would take Survivor to the Philippines, where three previous contestants who left their editions early due to injury will return. Watch a preview for what's to come and then read an extended Survivor finale review at TV Fanatic:

Warm water threatens vast Anatarctic ice shelf

A new study indicates that a large ice sheet is at risk. Warm water from below is causing it to melt.

Scientists are predicting the disappearance of another vast ice shelf in Antarctica by the end of the century that will accelerate rising sea levels.

The Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf fringing the Weddell Sea on the eastern side of Antarctica has so far not seen ice loss from global warming and much of the observation of melting has focused on the western side of the continent around the Amundsen Sea. But new research from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany says the 450,000-sq-km ice shelf is under threat.

"According to our calculations, this protective barrier will disintegrate by the end of this century," said Dr Harmut Hellmer, lead author of the study, published in the journal Nature this week.

The huge ice shelves that float on the seas fringing Antarctica provide a buffer against warming waters eating away at the base of the much larger glaciers behind them that sit on the land.

"Ice shelves are like corks in the bottles for the ice streams behind them," said Hellmer. "They reduce the ice flow.

"If, however, the ice shelves melt from below, they become so thin that the dragging surfaces become smaller and the ice behind them starts to move."

Hellmer and his team predict the melting of the Filchner-Ronne shelf could add up to 4.4 mm per year to rising global sea levels.

According to the latest estimates based on remote sensing data, global sea levels rose 1.5 mm a year between 2003 and 2010 due to melting glaciers and ice shelves, the scientists say. This is on top of an estimated 1.7 mm annual rise due to the expansion of the oceans as the water warms.

Costly Sea Defences

The research was funded by the European Union's ?Ice2sea' program, set up in the wake of the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that highlighted ice-sheets as the most significant remaining uncertainty in projections of rising sea levels. Projections from the Ice2sea project will feed into the fifth IPCC report due in 2013/2014.

It will also inform plans for major capital spending on sea defenses to protect Europe's coastlines, particularly areas of economic importance like London, with its tidal barrier on the River Thames, and the port of Rotterdam. A large part of the Netherlands is below sea level and protected by an elaborate system of dykes.

Professor David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey, who heads the Ice2sea program, told Reuters the Alfred Wegener Institute's findings add to evidence that warming oceans are having the greatest impact on the ice sheets, as opposed to atmospheric changes or the legacy of some long-term change decades or even hundreds of years ago.

"What people need to know with a sense of urgency is what is going to happen to sea levels over the next few decades," said Vaughan. "In those terms, these results are very big news indeed."

Vaughan is cautious about precise projections of the impact on sea levels. "For me, those numbers are about what might be plausible," he said. "I think we need to do some more work with the ice sheet models to determine exactly what sea level rises we might expect, but those are plausible numbers."

All other things being equal, the polar ice sheets reach a balance where the amount of snow going in each year is broadly matched by the number of icebergs coming out, but subtle changes like those associated with global warming, can affect that balance quite rapidly.

Vaughan said there was clear evidence that the widely-reported disintegration of the Larsen A and Larsen B ice shelves in 1995 and 2002 respectively, had led to the ice sheets that fed them moving faster into the sea, some of them many times the rate seen before collapse.

The scientific focus on the melting ice in the Amundsen sea is down to the fact that this is where it is happening now, but Vaughan said although the Weddell

Sea is not seeing ice loss at the moment, the German research supports the view that it will spread to other areas.

If there is a lesson for climate scientists, it's "don't behave like the infant school football team and follow the ball," he said.
