A torpedo-shaped robot that bobbed up and down along the Florida coast to map sound production by red grouper and toadfish has detected what appears to be the unmistakable sound of herring passing gas.

That is, a robot heard what scientists believe to be fish farts.

"This remains merely a hypothesis, an untested but logical idea," Carrie Wall, a graduate student in marine biology at the University of South Florida?who led the study, told me in an email today.

"We can't say (and haven't said) with any certainty that that is in fact the source of what we have termed the 6 kHz Sound," she added.

But all signs do appear to point in the direction of herring farts. Such sounds have been descried before, noted Wall, who sent me in the direction of a post on Improbable Research,?the organization that hands out the Ig Nobels. Two papers on herring farts earned that distinguished prize in 2004.

"Our hypothesis is potentially likely as menhaden and other species related to herring are present in our study area and the 6 kHz Sound has similar characteristics to the findings of the previous research," Wall told me.

The "6 KHz Sound" she refers to are at the least "three unknown biological sounds" documented by their one week survey along the West Florida Shelf, Wall and her colleagues report this week in the journal Marine Ecology Research.

The mystery sound is in addition to the detection of the more familiar grunts and whistles of red grouper and toadfish that typically make sound in the range from 100 Hz to 2000 Hz.

"6 kHz is far above that frequency range, suggesting that an alternative method of sound production (such as gas release) is responsible for this sound," Wall said.?

"However, without further research, we won't know for sure."

Protein 'jailbreak' helps breast cancer cells live

If the fight against breast cancer were a criminal investigation, then the proteins survivin, HDAC6, CBP, and CRM1 would be among the shadier figures. In that vein, a study to be published in the March 30 Journal of Biological Chemistry is the police report that reveals a key moment for keeping cancer cells alive: survivin's jailbreak from the nucleus, aided and abetted by the other proteins. The research highlights that a protein's location in a cell affects its impact on disease, and offers clear new leads for the investigation.

All four proteins were already under suspicion. Researchers, for example, have already tried to assess what levels of HDAC6 in patients with estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer may mean for their prognosis. The results have been inconclusive. The new research suggests that measuring overall levels may not be enough, said the study's senior author Dr. Rachel Altura, associate professor of pediatrics in The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a pediatric oncologist at Hasbro Children's Hospital.

"We need to look not only at the levels, but also where is it in the cell," she said.

Altura's emphasis on location comes from what her research team found as they tracked and tweaked the comings and goings of survivin in cells. Inside the nucleus, survivin is no problem. Outside the nucleus, but within the cell, it can prevent normal cell death, allowing cancer cells to persist.

In previous work, Altura and her collaborators established that under normal circumstances, CBP chemically regulates survivin, a process called acetylation, and keeps it in the nucleus. The question in the new work was how survivin gets out.

In a series of experiments, what they observed was that in human and mouse breast cancer cells, HDAC6 gathers at the boundary between the nucleus and the rest of the cell, becomes activated by CBP, then binds survivin and undoes its acetylation. This deacetylation allows survivin to then be shuttled out of the nucleus by CRM1.

In the classic jailbreak, CBP is a corrupt guard who looks the other way as HDAC6, the shovel, is smuggled in. The final accomplice, CRM1, is the tunnel with a getaway car on the other end.

Working the new leads

Altura said the research suggests a clear strategy ? to keep survivin in the nucleus ? and two leads to pursue it, both of which she has already begun working on with collaborators in academia and in the pharmaceutical industry.

One idea is to inhibit HDAC6 in an attempt to prevent it from misregulating the acetylation of survivin. While general HDAC inhibitors are in clinical trials, Altura is optimistic that blocking just HDAC6, using specific inhibitors developed by a colleague in Japan, would have fewer complications.

"You always have to worry about all the things you don't know that you are targeting," she said. "If we can target HDAC6, we can maybe block survivin from coming out of the nucleus and maintain it in its good state."

The other strategy is to block CRM1, Altura said, an idea she is pursuing with a pharmaceutical company in breast cancer cells in the lab. She said preliminary experiments look promising in keeping survivin inside the nucleus and making cancer cells more susceptible to dying.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Soul singer Bobby Womack has been released from the hospital following a successful recovery from pneumonia.

The cancer-stricken Womack also is scheduled to undergo surgery at a later date.

In a statement through his New York publicist, the 68-year-old Womack thanked his fans for their prayers, love and well wishes, and says he looks forward to when he tours in support of his upcoming album.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is known for such hits as "Lookin' For a Love," and "That's the Way I Feel About Cha." Womack also wrote the early Rolling Stones' hit "It's All Over Now."

"The Bravest Man in the Universe" comes out later this summer on XL Recordings. It's produced by Womack, Damon Albarn and Richard Russell.

Aftermarket Navigation Systems and Car DVD Players Save Money ...

Navigation systems. Car DVD players. It?s easy get swept away by all the latest technology when you?re in the showroom shopping for your next car or truck, but it?s important to remember that these features are also available in aftermarket models. In fact, choosing to install your car GPS and/or mobile video players as aftermarket equipment can actually save you a great deal of money without undermining either their performance or their appearance!

In the vast majority of cases, when you?re purchasing a vehicle, selecting a navigation system or video entertainment isn?t quite as straightforward as it sounds. That?s because these features come as part of particular packages or vehicle models. So while you may not be interested in heated seats or self-dimming mirrors, those features may also be included in the package that contains your desired in-dash navigation system. Now, you may be thinking, ?Wait, heated seats sound awesome,? but consider that you?re going to end up paying for a whole bunch of features that you may never actually use, just to get that navigation system. Especially if you?re trying to stick to a budget, that doesn?t make a whole lot of sense.

Aftermarket navigation systems are available in both portable and installed versions, and you may be surprised at just how affordable they are. Portable car GPS are often discounted because of the risk of theft, but they do offer perks like being able to operate the nav system while the vehicle is in motion (let the passenger do it please!) and the ability to transfer the unit from one car to another (great for rental cars, too!). Or, if you?re not too keen on that ubiquitous suction cup on the dash or windshield, you can go with an installed model. These types of in-dash navigation systems are often visually indistinguishable at a glance from the OEM setups that come from the factory, but since you won?t be shelling out for a huge number of unnecessary features, they won?t set you back nearly as much. Now, that doesn?t meant that aftermarket car navigation systems are bare-bones equipment. They tend to include options like Bluetooth connectivity as well as car audio capacity (often including satellite radio, auxiliary inputs for iPods, and more).

With aftermarket car DVD players, you can also get the performance and appearance you want without breaking the bank. In all but the highest end vehicles, your options are pretty limited when it comes to mobile video entertainment: usually it?s a ceiling-mounted, drop-down screen or nothing. But when you decide to go the aftermarket route, the possibilities really start to blossom. Of course, you can get the standard ceiling mount, and at a quite cost-effective price, but you can also get customized car audio video systems that include everything from headrest mounted screens to video game input jacks and more.

So when you?re trying to decide whether to pick out the factory options that include the DVD player and GPS for your next car, make sure you think it through. If you?ll use all of the features included in the package that has the electronics you want?and you?re content with the features of the OEM DVD player or car GPS?then that option probably makes sense. But if you?re paying for tons of features that you know you?ll never use, or if you?re looking for capability unavailable in stock options, then your best bet is to head on down to your local car audio shop. Their installers can set you up with great aftermarket components that will bring you the style and performance you want.

Warm weather puts trees on fast forward

ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2012) ? Unseasonably high temperatures have coaxed pollen from American elm trees, delicate green flowers from spicebush shrubs and a cloud of deep pink flowers from red maples, heralding the unusually early arrival of spring in central New York and reflecting a phenomenon happening across the eastern United States.

Trees and many other plants are developing flowers, and grasses are growing two to three weeks earlier than usual, raising the specter of a long and intense allergy season and concerns about what could happen to fruit crops -- both in the forest and the orchard -- if the budding fruit has to face a typical late spring frost.

"This warm weather might be really pleasant and some people might find it comforting," said Dr. Donald J. Leopold, chair of the Department of Environmental and Forest Biology at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, N.Y. "But when the weather is really altered from typical conditions, there are always winners and losers among all types of both plants and animals. With the many plant and animal species in the East, some will benefit and some will be adversely impacted with these unusually warm conditions."

Leopold studies woody and herbaceous native and non-native plants; in his 27 years at ESF, he has never seen these species bloom on campus before April 1. The consequences of this early blooming depend on the weather during the next month or so. Temperatures in the low 20s and lower can damage any developing fruit, such as the winged fruits of the silver maple, which are eaten by wildlife. More economically serious would be for apples and other fruit trees to bloom in mid- to late April then be subjected to a killing frost.

The early spring is not good news for allergy sufferers. Leopold said maples, willows, aspens, poplars, and other early spring blooming woody species are major contributors of wind-dispersed pollen that causes allergic reactions so allergy sufferers are likely to notice an early and prolonged allergy season.

A quick walk around the ESF Quad at the center of campus gave Leopold an opportunity to point out an American elm in front of the library that was already producing pollen, a row of spicebush shrubs sporting flowers of various sizes, and a red maple covered with male and female flowers.

Native willow planted in a rooftop demonstration project on ESF's Illick Hall has also bloomed early. A dogwood known as a Cornelian cherry, which produces fruit that various species of wildlife feed on, was past its blooming peak.

Elsewhere in the region, the silver maples peaked the week of March 12, weeks ahead of their average bloom time; some saucer magnolias are starting to open weeks ahead of their earliest bloom times in Central New York.

Leopold routinely collects twigs over ESF's spring break to teach his students identification techniques during his fall dendrology course. He said he has never seen the buds as swollen as they are this year.

With temperatures in Syracuse expected to be in the 70s again on March 20 and into the 80s March 21, the cycle is not about to change.

"Things are really going to pop this week," he said.
