Parrots are one of the most popular bird species kept as pets. Not only are they gorgeous?with their feather colors and patterns, but a lot of them can also mimic sounds such as human voices. Many bird owners train their parrots to talk, which makes these pets even more entertaining and a joy to keep.
Here are three of the top talking pet parrots:
African Grey Parrots ? according to Mattie Sue Athan, an International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) certified parrot behavior consultant, ?African grey parrots have a reputation for being smart and not loud.?
Nurturing vocal abilities must be developed while they are fledglings and before they hit sexual maturity by enhancing their independent play. They should learn to do independent toy play by the time they hit 6 months of age because otherwise, there is a possibility they can vocalize too much and develop destructive behaviors at the age of 9 months.
Quaker Parrots ? also called monk parakeets, quaker parrots are only as big as cockatiels but their vocal abilities are as big as African Greys. Jon-Mark Davey, who operates a quaker parrot information website and co-authored ?Parrots in the City? with Mattie Sue Athan, says that not all quaker parrots talk. He explains, ?They will speak when they wish and say what they want to say, the timing is theirs. Speak to your birds as if they understand, they just may surprise you.?
According to Meghan Kilgrew of Massachusetts who has a 3-year-old male quaker called ?Jade?, ?They have an amazing ability to mimic any and everything that sparks their interest. He has associated certain actions with specific words and uses them together. For example, after pulling out one of my earrings he will yell, ?Let go!?
Budgie or Parakeet ? female budgies do not talk, it?s mostly the males and they talk in a fast, high-pitched voice. You?ll have to listen carefully to tell what they are saying. Budgies are small long-tailed seed-eating parrots native to Australia. They are very resilient, having survived the environmental conditions over the last 5 million years. They?re usually just green and yellow with black markings but years of being bred in captivity has produced some beautiful colorings such as blue, white, and gray. They are one of the most popular pet birds to own, not only because they talk a lot, but also because they are playful and low-maintenance.
Diane Grindol, who writes the ?Small Birds? column in BIRD TALK and is the author of ?Teaching Your Bird to Talk,? recommends that budgie owners should spend quality time talk to their pet and to make them listen to the radio so they can learn more sounds and words.
