The University of Minnesota School of Public Health seeks an expert professional communicator to serve as Senior Director of Advancement and External Affairs (Communications Department Director, job classification 9348. The successful candidate will be an experienced strategic communications professional and a manager adept at directing a professional team of diversely talented individuals. Advancement is a model that integrates the disciplines of communications, alumni relations, and development to lead, position and amplify the school's public impact and to build and strengthen relationships domestically and globally among all of our varied stakeholders. In the School of Public Health, this includes advancing our research, education and community engagement missions through:
- public and media relations;
- electronic and print communications;
- philanthropy and donor relations;
- alumni relations;
- a large mentoring program engaging students with public health professionals;
- national and local recognition of faculty contributions to the field; and
- school-sponsored seminars and events.
In carrying out these duties, the Senior Director will report directly to the Dean of the School of Public Health; will work closely with the Heads of the school's four divisions and associate deans; will serve as a member of the School's Executive Team; and will collaborate and coordinate activities as appropriate with health sciences and University communication leaders, and colleagues at the Association of Schools of Public Health.
Responsibilities:
Provide leadership in the development and implementation of external relations to advance the School in ways that are consistent with its priorities and goals. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Assist the Dean and Executive Team in planning, implementing and coordinating strategic community partnerships with designated domestic and international stakeholders.
- Assist in planning, directing and coordinating the Dean's leadership activities with external stakeholders in local, national and international settings to advance the field of public health and the SPH.
- Assist the Dean in planning, developing and maintaining international relationships and programs, and coordinate across the SPH and the AHC.
- Develop a communications program that leverages talents and resources across the School, the University, and from the private sector to advance the School locally and nationally in a manner that is both efficient and effective. This includes working closely with Academic Health Center communicators, the Minnesota Medical Foundation, University Relations, and external consultants where and when appropriate.
- Identify and implement internal and external opportunities to build on and enhance the reputation of the school, its programs and its faculty.
- Conceptualize and coordinate effective, high-quality communication and collateral materials that support the School's priorities and goals.
- Develop internal communications initiatives to build a greater sense of community within the school.
- Advise and support the dean on strategic partnerships, communications and public affairs issues.
- Assure the integration of the School into the broader communications and public affairs programs of the AHC and of the University.
- Direct the School's efforts to enhance and strengthen its Web presence.
- Contribute to the success of the School's development program.
- Serve as a member of the SPH Executive Team.
- Oversee marketing efforts to traditional students, executive students, and lifelong learners.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in communication, public relations, marketing, mass communication, journalism, or a related field. Candidates should have at least seven years of post-degree experience in the profession, marked by a demonstrated record of systematic growth and accomplishment. Three to five years of experience leading a team of professionals is required.
Desired Qualifications:
Agency or organizational experience in planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating comprehensive
external relations programs including strategic communications and public affairs are important, as is a knowledge of communication
technologies in the higher education market place. Communications and public affairs experience in a public health, health care or higher
education environment is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and leader known for personal
integrity, professionalism and commitment to developing proactive communications and public affairs solutions. Experience and comfort
working in diverse environments, as well as developing international or global relationships is important to this position. Experience
serving as a member of a senior level team is also critical.
The Senior Director of Advancement and External Affairs will have a 100% annually renewable administrative appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
